Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? Below are answers to some of the most common inquiries we receive about our instruments, services, and consignment process. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out — we’re here to help.

Can I try a violin before I buy it?

Yes! We offer in-person trials by appointment. If you’re not local, we may also arrange a short-term trial period with shipping, depending on the instrument and location.

Yes! We sell antique and modern violins, violas, cellos and bows. However, we do not carry commercial instruments for beginning students.

Absolutely. Every instrument is professionally set up for optimal tone, playability, and reliability—ready for performance from day one.

Most instruments include transparent pricing. For certain high-value or rare instruments, we may list them as “Inquire” to allow for a more personal conversation.

How does consignment work?

We evaluate your instrument, agree on a sale price range, and handle marketing, inquiries, and showings. Once it sells, you receive payment minus a previously agreed-upon commission.

We primarily accept violins (and occasionally bows or violas) that meet our standards for craftsmanship, condition, and marketability. We accept handmade instruments both antique and modern that fit into the quality benchmarks for Washington Fine Violins. We are unable to accept commercial beginning student instruments or bows.

It varies—some sell in days, others take months. We keep you informed and only accept instruments we believe we can sell within a reasonable timeframe.

Do you offer written appraisals for insurance or estates?

Yes. We offer written appraisals suitable for insurance purposes, estate valuation, or personal documentation.

Yes, we can conduct preliminary evaluations via photos and descriptions. For formal appraisals, physical inspection is often required, especially for higher-value instruments.
